January 7, 2025

The day got off to a shaky start, so to speak. Shortly after I got off the phone with Emma, the room began to wobble and I watched a clothes hanger shaking back and forth. An earthquake in Tibet had sent shockwaves our way. It didn’t impact things for us in India; we’ll see in a couple of days if our contacts in Bhutan were impacted at all.

After checking out of our hotel, we headed to the conference center for day 2. Both days the event was kicked off by a bit of singing and prayer. It is beautiful to see such deep and unabashed faith, complete with joyful clapping and carefree dancing. With Epiphany being yesterday, such differences in culture and worship practice are a healthy reminder of how vast the church of God truly is. We don’t speak the same language, and our worship practices may vary, but we trust in the same Jesus who came for all peoples.

After the conference ended, we jumped into a hired car which drove us 3.5 hours away to Dalsingpara. (I may have fallen asleep on the drive.) A new, abbreviated teaching conference begins tomorrow.

Participants gather for worship on day 2 of the conference.
A handful of participants came up front to dance to the song. Can’t say that I’ve seen that at any conferences I’ve attended in the US.
Pastor Sachin and his congregation honored us with gifts of appreciation. We both were donned with a Nepali scarf and fez, and each of us received other items as well.
My interpreter, Vivek, was given the responsibility to translate for me on short notice. He did great! His English is far, far better than my Nepali (which is currently at 0)!
This is the building where the conference took place in Siliguri. The Word of Life Centre, it is called. It has rooms for attendees to stay in overnight, as well as a dining hall and large spaces for presentations. It was a great facility for our purposes.
