In the last week, we’ve been vividly reminded of the brokenness of our world. A large earthquake followed by a devastating storm in Haiti and political and civil unrest in Afghanistan are very different situations in almost every aspect except one – people that God loves and that Jesus died for are hurting and in need.
These two situations are a world away from most of us here in Grand Rapids but we can join in the efforts to bring help to those in need. One thing that everyone can do, regardless of abilities, resources, or location, is to pray:
• Pray for the people of Haiti and Afghanistan.
• Pray for leaders in those nations and for those seeking to help.
• Pray for God’s hand of protection, especially around our Christian brothers and sisters who are facing persecution for their faith. Some of them will need God’s power to stand firm in their faith in the face of death.
• Pray for our own leaders, that God would give them His wisdom and guidance and that they would follow it as they seek peace and restoration.
Though these are difficult situations, we trust in what we know about God: that He gave His Son Jesus for the world because of His great love for all of us (John 3:16) and that God is already at work to bring about good for those who love him (Romans 8:28).
